KRAMNIK SUES FIDE FOR DEFAMATION

A quotation from the article “Vladimir Kramnik Sues FIDE for Defamation after Daniel Naroditsky Controversy” (India Today, 1 January 2026):
"Czech Grandmaster David Navara has also claimed to have felt distressed and suicidal due to Kramnik's online cheating charge against him."
"Kramnik has consistently defended his conduct, maintaining that his statements are substantiated."
- Implicitly, it is said that Kramnik made a statement that Navara was cheating, and that Kramnik asserts that this statement is substantiated.
And that is a lie and a form of defamation.
I have read Kramnik's statements and watched his videos.
Kramnik has NOT accused Navara of cheating.
From the article “Kramnik Takes FIDE to Swiss Civil Court - Bypassing Sport's Usual Arbitration System” (Worldchess News, 30 December 2025), which presumably represents the position of FIDE:
"[Kramnik] ... now faces accusations that his own allegations against others crossed ethical and legal lines."
- The article implies that Kramnik has made several accusations and only accusations.
Instead, most of Kramnik's "accusations" are carefully formulated suspicions or questions.
In such cases, he clearly states that he does not accuse but merely demands investigations of statistically abnormal playing results and demands explanations.
Thus, when writing about the current defamation lawsuit, the slandering continues and even amplifies.
Typically, Kramnik's precise and clear formulations are almost never quoted.
The written text of Kramnik's critics simply does not correspond to what Kramnik actually said.
And I am talking about it not because of Kramnik.
I am talking about it because of the principle that important statements must be reported correctly.

FIDE FAULTY VOTING SYSTEM

I am afraid that FIDE and ICCF have a mistaken voting system. Their press releases often do not specify how many deputies participated in the vote.

Their demagoguery is to say "majority" instead of "majority of those who participated".

Or they declare that "P percentage voted for the decision" instead of "P percentage of those who participated voted for the decision".

It also leads to contradictions too easily.

Already, when FIDE sanctioned Russia in 2022, public propaganda gave the impression that the majority of FIDE member states demanded the sanctions. I am afraid that, instead, it was the majority of those who voted. In any case, it seems that the percentage of those countries that supported the sanctions was much lower than the impression made by press releases.

Suppose that Y is the number of those who vote "Yes", N is the number of those who vote "No", and A is the number of those who are neutral, abstain or are missing. We assume that A > 0, as is usually the case. Then, obviously,

Y/(Y + N) > Y/(Y + N + A)

That is the basics of probability calculus and the calculus of percentages.

FIDE and ICCF public reports of their voting results are not transparent, making political demagoguery too easy.

I suggest that reports and relevant news include:

  1. The number of FIDE member states.
  2. The minimum number of YES-votes required to accept a decision (the quota).
  3. The number of those who were ABSENT.
  4. The numbers of YES, NO, and NEUTRAL.

My present essay is motivated by the fact that, recently, FIDE voted on whether to annul the sanctions imposed on Russia. According to FIDE's own press releases, it managed to adapt at once to parallel decisions that conflicted with each other. See, for example:

"Chess World Left In Limbo As FIDE's Russia Vote Ends In Chaos And Confusion",

Worldchess, 14 December 2025

Quotations:

"When it came to the vote, Russia's controversial motion passed by 61 in favour, to 51 against."

"A second motion proposed by the FIDE Council also passed by 69 votes to 40."

Note that there are around 200 member federations of FIDE, and:

61 + 51 = 112 < 200

69 + 40 = 109 < 200

Note also that 200/2 = 100, and:

61 < 100

69 < 100

That is, no decision was taken with an absolute majority.

Now, let us take a look at FIDE's official statement:

"FIDE General Assembly decisions regarding Russia and Belarus"
Fide News, 14 December 2025

Quotation:

"In a procedural outcome, reflecting the diversity of views within the chess community, the General Assembly voted to adopt both the resolution proposed by the Chess Federation of Russia (61 votes in favour, 51 against, 14 abstentions and 15 delegates not voting) and the resolution proposed by the FIDE Council (69 votes in favour, 40 against, 15 abstentions and 17 delegates not voting)."

However, the total number of member states is still missing, as

61 + 51 + 14 + 15 = 141 < 200

69 + 40 + 15 + 17 = 141 < 200

I criticised the demagoguery and illogicality of FIDE's voting and its interpretations already on 24 September 2024

A RAPID GAME

Recently, I have played on the chess platform Premium Chess

As an example, I shall provide one training game. It turns out that the training games cannot be shared from that platform. However, the player can download their own games, provided they have paid the subscription fee.

I had black pieces in the game WhiteWolf - Nanomaster

The video above was taken using my personal NCH software. You can also see it on Flickr

Below is a short analysis of that game:

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST CHESS GRANDMASTER KRAMNIK

It started in 2023, if not earlier. I have noticed the following features of that campaign:

  1. They do not quote Kramnik and recommend not reading his texts or watching his videos.
  2. They assert that Kramnik said A, while Kramnik, instead, said "Not A, but B."
  3. If Kramnik said C in the case of E, they assert that he also said C in the case of F.
  4. They intentionally confuse all relevant modalities and meanings of the terms.
  5. If Kramnik really did something wrong, it would almost never show up in such a discourse. It would not reveal itself.
  6. If Kramnik's ideas have some positive meaning in a particular context, they would be absolutely denied and ignored.
  7. The campaign clearly exemplifies the unpleasant truth that chess players are not as intelligent and moral as they are often perceived to be. Even several grandmasters and professors who play chess show up with complete nonsense.

The whole campaign is reduced to the banal McCarthyism and Russophobia - a form of racism. Arrogance, ignorance and stupid ethnocentrism. I am completely tired of the so-called "chess community".

KRAMNIKU JA NARODITSKI JUHTUM

Naroditsky vs Kramnik (Youtube)

Sotsiaalmeedias kasutab Kramnik seejuures väljendit "malemaffia" (chess mafia).

X-s (Twitteris) nägin suurt hulka Kramniku aadressil esitatud süüdistusi, sõimu ja ähvardusi.

Heitsin pilgu ka Tumblrisse. Üks esimesi Kramniku teemalisi postitusi, mida seal nägin, teatas, et laimamisega Naroditski surma põhjustanud malesuurmeister Kramnik "tuleks surnuks peksta".

Ütelge nüüd, et maletajatel on mõistus peas.

Ei ole.

Isegi mitmetel male tippsuurmeistritel pole raasugi aru peas.

THE GAME LASTED ONLY 10 MOVES

Gegonz - Nanomaster
Chess-mail, 2023-2024

I had black pieces.

It is not a fork

If Black takes the knight a5, then White takes the knight d2.

If 10...Bxa5, then 11 Kxd2.

The position after 10...Ne4!

After the move 10...Ne4!, two White's pieces are attacked at once.
However, this is not a fork because two Black's pieces are involved in the combination.

Such a combinatorial motif seems common in chess but has not received due attention. Such a tactical motif does not even have a name (or well-known name).

Yes, it is zwischenzug.

However, here, it is a particular kind of zwischenzug. Zwischenzug is used here to defend against the opponent's threat and create a new threat - so that, in sum, two threats against the opponent will appear on the chessboard.

And no, it is not the roentgen motif.

In the case of the roentgen motif, two opponent's pieces are suddenly attacked after one move, while the attacker's two pieces are involved. However, in our example, one of the opponent's pieces was under attack from the very beginning.

Thus, it is neither a fork nor a roentgen. And it is too general to say that it is a zwischenzug merely. But after one move, two opponent's pieces are simultaneously under attack, similarly to a fork or a roentgen.

A PUBLIC APPEAL TO CHESS ORGANISATIONS ON THE BOMBING OF THE GAZA STRIP

Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022, and the war is still going on today.

Just a few days after the start of the war in Ukraine, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) initiated the process of a chess blockade of Russia and Belarus, which assisted Russia in the war.

A few months later, a decision was taken that Russian and Belarusian chess teams would not be allowed to participate in FIDE international tournaments, while individual chess players would not be allowed to play under the Russian or Belarusian flag.

Online chess platforms soon joined the campaign.

The blockade was eventually joined by the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF).

FIDE also imposed a temporary ban on participating in international tournaments on international chess grandmaster Sergei Karyakin. As a result, Karyakin, one of the world’s strongest chess players, was excluded from the candidates’ tournament for world chess champion.

Karyakin was accused of publicly “justifying” Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. It is indeed what Karyakin did, referring to the systematic crimes committed by Ukraine against people of Russian nationality.

Karyakin was of the opinion that, in the name of stopping the genocide in Ukraine, Russia was justified in going to war.

However, the civil war in Ukraine, which started in 2014, had killed around 20,000 civilians by 2022. But, by November 2023, the Russian invasion that began in 2022 had already killed hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers.

However, there have been several shortcomings in the sanctioning actions of international chess organisations concerning the war in Ukraine.

These organisations did not have rules for chess blocking of Russia and Belarus. The bans were imposed by introducing new rules on the fly, ad hoc. These rules were applied retrospectively. Also, these restrictions amount to collective punishment, which is prohibited by international law. The decisions in question also violated the accepted moral principles of sport and chess-sport. It was a politicisation of sport.

However, one of the main drawbacks was that the punishment of Russia and Belarus was discriminatory, selective.

For example, there have been no barriers to chess players from other countries that have started unjustified wars, occupied or annexed foreign territories, committed war crimes, etc.

For example, international chess organisations have not imposed any barriers on US chess players despite the US starting unjustified wars against Afghanistan and Iraq, occupying these countries for many years and committing war crimes there. At the time when the Russian and Belarus chess players were being punished, the US had just finally withdrawn its troops from Afghanistan, but some US military bases are still in Iraq today.

On 07 October this year, 2023, the Palestinian armed group Hamas, exiting the Gaza Strip, suddenly attacked Israel. Over a thousand Israeli soldiers and civilians were killed in the attack.

Israel then declared war on Hamas and started military operations in the Gaza Strip, an area separated by a wall and barbed wire, where more than two million people live on a few hundred square kilometres. It is one of the most densely populated areas on the planet and has essentially been turned into an open-air prison.

In the course of this military action, Israel imposed an absolute blockade on the Gaza Strip, with no water and no electricity. Food and medicine could not be sent there either. Finally, the blocking of internet access was added. People have not been allowed in and out, with a few exceptions.

In the walled area, Israel started destroying homes with powerful aircraft bombs and rockets, hitting and/or damaging hospitals and refugee shelters.

A month later today, 9,000 civilians have been killed in Gaza, more than half of them women and children. More than 10,000 people are still trapped under the rubble.

International organisations confirm that Israel has managed to kill more children in the Gaza Strip in one month in 2023 than were killed in all the war zones on the planet in the whole of 2022. In fact, significantly more children have been killed by Israeli bombs in one month than in two years of war in Ukraine. See also, e.g.:

“GAZA: 3,195 CHILDREN KILLED IN THREE WEEKS SURPASSES ANNUAL NUMBER OF CHILDREN KILLED IN CONFLICT ZONES SINCE 2019”
Save the Children, 29 October 2023

The statistics on civilian casualties are similar.

The United Nations has raised suspicions that Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip are a war crime.

However, the Colombian President has explicitly called it genocide.

Returning now to the game of chess, international chess organisations such as FIDE and the ICCF, as well as the major chess platforms, have done nothing about Israel.

Therefore, I call on all chess organisations to either immediately lift the restrictions imposed on Russia and Belarus or to impose the same restrictions on Israel, whose disproportionate and indiscriminate military action is killing a catastrophic number of civilians in the Gaza Strip every day.

Suppose it is permissible to obstruct Russian sports persons to get Russia to stop its military aggression against Ukraine. In that case, it must also be permissible to obstruct Israeli sports persons to get Israel to stop its war crimes and to punish the perpetrators.

Since there is obviously no hope that the politically biased international chess organisations will impose such restrictions on Israel, I will make a proposal to all individual chess players - a proposal that I myself will follow:

  • Refuse to play chess with anyone who plays under the Israeli flag.
  • Refuse to play chess with anyone who is an Israeli citizen and who does not publicly, clearly and loudly condemn Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
  • Refuse to play chess with anyone who publicly supports or justifies Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

These restrictions would remain in place until Israel has lifted the blockade of the Gaza Strip and stopped the bombing of its residents, and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and his henchmen have been convicted of war crimes in court.

Of course, local chess clubs, local chess tournament organisers, etc., can also impose similar restrictions.

However, at a non-individual, organisational, official level, the third point above, which calls for public condemnation of Israel’s actions, should be avoided. Notably, the Israeli police have threatened to severely punish anyone who criticises Israel’s current military action in the Gaza Strip. It is unreasonable to formally demand that a sports person should make such a statement, which would result in him being punished by the authorities in his own country.

As for Hamas, the European Union has already declared Hamas a terrorist organisation, so there is no need to impose such sporting sanctions on the group. After all, you are not going to meet a chess player playing under the Hamas flag anywhere, anyway.

As far as the Jews are concerned, collective punishment must not be applied to them. No one may be accused or discriminated against based on their nationality.

An Open Letter to the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation

Jüri Eintalu

Please exclude me from the membership of the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation.

I no longer pay the membership fee, I no longer participate in competitions organized by the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation, and I no longer represent the Republic of Estonia in correspondence chess.

All my games as a representative of Estonia have ended by now. (I drew all four games in the Baltic/Sweden friendly match.)

Justification

Last year, in 2022, the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF) adopted two fundamental decisions.

The first decision established that ICCF member states could also be expelled or temporarily suspended for non-financial reasons.

In doing so, however, no set of rules was adopted for which reasons and how the activities of the member states may be suspended.

Another decision suspended the participation of Russia and Belarus in ICCF activities, citing the war in Ukraine.

However, this decision did not correspond to good legal practices and was also of morally dubious value.

First, this decision was retrospective because the penalized conduct began before adopting the new rulebook.

Second, this decision was discriminatory and selective. For example, US correspondence chess players were not punished for the fact that the US had started wars in Afghanistan, Iraq or Serbia.

Third, this decision applied collective punishment because the sportspersons were punished for the decisions of their homeland government.

Fourth, the method of counting votes was absurd and not transparent when decisions were made. Neutral and non-voting countries were excluded from the calculation without distinction; at the same time, there was no established quorum — the minimum number of countries that must vote (positively or negatively) for the meeting to be capable of making a decision.

It was necessary to reach 2/3 of the votes to pass decisions. However, the decision-making mechanism used was such that the decision could have been adopted even if only 3 countries had voted resultant (for example, the USA and the UK “Yes” and Russia “No”) and all the others had remained neutral.

In other words, a system was used where remaining neutral or not voting acted as a positive vote “Yes”. Because if the countries that remained neutral had been included in the total number of those who voted, the proportion of those who voted in favour would have remained less than 2/3, and such decisions would not have been adopted.

My complaints to the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation

According to the data from ICCF, the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation initially had not nominated a representative for this vote. Still, in the end, the name of one particular person appeared there. However, according to the data from ICCF, this person either remained neutral or did not participate in the vote (the ICCF does not specify this important nuance).

The Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation website did not have any information about this voting, nor was a relevant e-mail sent to the correspondence chess players. Furthermore, the organization’s website also lacked information about the voting results, and the results were not announced in e-mails either.

The opinion of the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation members, on whose behalf the Estonian representative at least formally participated in the vote, has not been asked, nor has there been any discussion or voting in Estonia.

I have never received any response to the official inquiry I sent, before the vote, through the ICCF website, to the official representative of the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation.

That the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation can still send e-mails to correspondence chess players is evident from the fact that recently, in an e-mail sent to many addresses, the Estonian Correspondence Chess Federation invited Estonian correspondence chess players to participate in a friendly match as representatives of the Estonian team.

I do not regard it possible to belong to an organization on behalf of whose members essential (and weird) international decisions are made in such a way that the opinion of the members of the organization is not asked, their questions are not answered, and they are not even informed afterwards about the vote or its results.

With respect

Jüri Eintalu
